“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” The Dalai Lama
Practicing compassion toward myself has been transformative. When I find myself being hurtful in my thoughts, I take a moment to reframe it to something positive. Once I started recognizing my own harmful patterns and what they cause me to do, (close off, get critical, etc) it actually helped me soften towards others when they displayed those behaviors too. We will never know someone else’s complete story. We don’t know how they have been spoken to and how they speak to themselves. We can, however, choose how WE speak to them and treat them. So remember to be compassionate. Say hello. Genuinely ask how someone is and listen. When you know someone who is going through a hard time, ask yourself how you might help them. A simple note, phone call, or home cooked meal can be simple for you but make a huge difference to them.
